Lake Como, Val Chiavenna, The Engadine
August 20 – 27, 2010
Cost: $4,250 (single supplement $625)
St. Moritz lies high up in the tranquil Engadine Valley of Switzerland. Few travelers associate its string of glaciers and 11,000 ft. peaks with the Mediterranean warmth of Lake Como, which lies just 40 miles to the south. We have created this walking tour to take advantage of both of these unique environments. Participants on this tour will experience all of the lush beauty of the lower Lake District but will also venture into the seldom-visited Valchiavenna. This valley rises slowly at first, and then spectacularly up to the Maloja pass, which leads to the high alpine plateau of the Engadine. Opportunities for vigorous hiking abound while easier trails, cable cars, and cog-wheel trains make it possible for anyone to enjoy leisurely walks through this beautiful region.
Our “Tastes” will range from the fresh sea foods and light pastas of Lake Como followed by the earthy specialties of Chiavenna such as polenta and grilled meats from the “piotta,” or granite stone grill. The Swiss will add “rosti”, roasted potatoes topped with cremini mushrooms. All of these are complemented of course by fine local vintages; including those of the Chiavenna areas own nebbiolo, the same varietal that the Piemontese use to make the exquisite Barolo.
